MUSIC FROM THE PLACE/ARAVIND-JAISHANKAR
This is the space out of which Aravind and I do our daily work. The control room is larger than we need it to be - and we're super happy about it! Its boundaries were dictated by the existing beams and columns. It is equipped with custom in-wall main monitors and a 7.1 surround mixing system. I guarantee that it is the most neutral room you have heard.
We also have an isolated 'room within a room', for the recording area. It is built on a separate floated concrete slab, and climate controlled using a silent HVAC system - probably the quietest and most comfortable room to record voices and solo instruments in Chennai. (It is our private facility and not available for hire.)
Come and listen!
The build of the floated concrete slab:
The first three years of my career (1997-2000) were spent old dubbing studio that had gone out of use. When it became clear that our requirements were not matched to the space, and because we got a favourable rental offer in the prime of the city, we decided to set up our own studio... the first iteration of Music From The Place. Here are some memories...
When the building got sold in early 2015, we decided to build a permanent, no compromise space - and luckily Aravind's terrace provided the perfect location. Civil work began in May 2015, and the studio became functional in December.
